Seed Collection Workshop at the San Dimas Canyon Natural AreaSaturday, June 6: 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Join us for a morning of seed collecting at the San Dimas Canyon Natural Area. In partnership with LA County Parks and Recreation Department, volunteers will be collecting seeds as part of an effort to conserve hyperlocal native plant genetics of LA County Natural Areas. The seeds will be stewarded by docents and volunteers in conservation seed banks. As we walk and talk, you’ll learn respectful collection practices, techniques for identifying and gathering the seeds of various plant families, and common tools and materials for field work. This event will take place over a short, low-intensity hike, but we may encounter uneven surfaces and slight inclines. Make sure to wear good hiking shoes, long sleeves, and pants. Please bring a large water bottle, sun protection (SPF and a hat), and a snack if you’d like it. Gloves and small clippers are a good idea as well. All are welcome; seed collection experience is not required. The seed collection will be led by Nina Raj of Altadena Seed Library. Nina is a CNPS Board Member, Certified CA Naturalist, UC Master Gardener, Certified Theodore Payne Foundation Native Landscaper, and Grow LA Gardens Trainee.
