Tiny Forests, Big Stories: Lichens & Bryophytes of the San Gabrielswith Chris CoshlandThursday, May 28, 2026 Zoom Meeting only: 7:30 - 9:00 p.m.  Mix of lichens and bryophytes: moss, Cladonia sp, matchstick lichen, and Leptogium Think you can tell a lichen from a bryophyte — or whether it belongs on your lunch menu? Join us for a fun introduction to these remarkable organisms and their special place in our environment. Discover why lichens and bryophytes matter to our native landscapes, how they survive in surprising places, and which species are common in Southern California and surrounding areas.  Clockwise: Rounded moss - Gemmabryum brassicoides, rare. Lichens on Rabbit Poo, rare -Texosporium sancti-jacobi (green) with associated lichen, Caloplaca subpyraceelia (orange). Liverwort - Marsupella bolanderi, rare. Fungi - Octospora gemmicola growing on moss - Gemmabryum.Chris Coshland is a Cultural and Natural Resources Manager for the Department of Defense. She previously worked as a District Botanist and Forest Botanist at theForest Service for 18 years. She is a curator at the University of California Riverside for their lichen and bryophyte collections. Chris went to Southern Oregon University for her education. Her volunteer work includes surveys of Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and various beaches in San Diego County.
