Plant of the Month: Festuca idahoensis (Idaho fescue)
Festuca idahoensis (Idaho fescue)
This perennial common bunch grass of Western North America is densely compact and can be grown in full sun to light shade. It prefers some shade in the afternoon for inland areas. It has beautiful green to blue-green colored leaves growing 8” – 1’, long lived. Flower stems can be 18” – 2’ tall. Flowers are narrow and open. Smaller and more delicate in texture than F. californica. Drought tolerant and deer resistant. Adaptable to most soil conditions, including serpentine. Not benefited by fire or grazing. Extra moisture will keep it fresh, but eventually Idaho fescue needs a rest in the late summer and fall. Idaho fescue is found usually in pure stands on north or east facing slopes associated with thingrass, junegrass and a rich assortment of native perennial wildflowers. Try planting in drifts if you have the space. Idaho fescue has good seedling vigor and can be established by either seed or plugs. For seeding a single species meadow, sow at 2 ounces per 1,000 square feet. Native to rocky slopes and openings in woods in many plant communities of coast ranges, north Sierra foothills and northern mountains below 5,000’
