Join CNPS Sequoia Chapter for another rare plant excursion! Our Rare Plant Chair and all-around rare plant expert, Chris Winchell, is back to lead another day hike in the Sierra National Forest. He will be joined by The Medley’s, two seasoned ornithologists who will be present to showcase the local species and answer questions about birding in the Sierras. It’s true: botanists and birders can be friends! Chris will lead the group to a handful of locations near Whiskey Ridge to track down populations of the ever-charismatic, endemic Rawson’s flaming trumpet (Collomia rawsoniana) and the not-as-showy but just-as-outstanding Yosemite bog orchid (Platanthera yosemitensis). This will be a great opportunity to botanize and birdwatch with folks who turned a passion for observing the natural world into a career. Bring your hand lens and binoculars and join us for a beautiful and informative day. Please be prepared for all kinds of weather (heat, cold, rain, or snow) and dress accordingly!
We are limiting participation to 15 guests, so email Kris Robison (CNPS Sequoia Chapters' Field Trip Chair) at kristofer.robison@gmail.com to save your spot today. If you’re not a member of the California Native Plant Society already, this is a great time to join!
Meeting Time and Place: We will meet at Chilkoot Campground on Beasore Road at 0900. Please consider carpooling, if possible! From the campground, we will caravan to several field sites to look for Rawson’s flaming trumpet, Yosemite bog orchid, and other rare species, as time allows. There will be ample time to explore, identify the local flora, and spend time gazing at/listening to feathered friends.
Directions: From Bass Lake, Chilkoot Campground is a short drive up Beasore Road. The campground has cell service (depending on your carrier) and pit toilets, but there is no running water, so please plan accordingly.
Optional Saturday Night Camping: A handful of Sequoia Chapter members are planning to camp the night before at Chilkoot Campground. If that sounds fun to you, please join us Saturday night! Regardless, we will meet with everyone at 0900 Sunday morning and caravan from there.
